For this assignment, we were tasked with creating a couple different transitions based on footage provided for us. In the video, the order of transitions are: invisible cut, J and L cut, match cut, speed ramp, glitch transition, action cut, and light leak.
My favorite transition to edit was the J and L cuts, because It felt like I was editing a documentary. I had always wondered how editors moved the audio of clips to extend past or before it, so it was interesting to be able to do that myself. I think my least favorite edit was the speed ramp, because I found it hard to find clips that had enough movement and energy to match what the speed ramp needed to do. I also really enjoyed editing the last couple of transitions when we used keyframes and effects. I used to do some editing in after effects, so it reminded me a lot of the ideas in that program.
I think if I were to take one of these concepts to do an entire video with, It would be the J and L cut. It would be cool to do a whole documentary style video of a day in my life or something similar, and have a lot of the clips with the audio overlapping with other clips. I think it adds a professional look to the video that is hard to achieve with just straight cuts between all the clips. I am currently editing a travel vlog, and I have a couple longer talking segments, and a lot of B-roll, so I might try to use this edit to make the talking clips more interesting to the viewer.
Even though I said the speed ramp was my least favorite, I still think it is an important one to learn and be able to use. If I were wanting to edit any commercials or short form content I can see it coming in handy, and I will be looking out for it in the content I see coming up. I just think I struggled with the right clips, but If it were something like sports or more intense action sequences, I can see where it would come in handy.
I also really liked doing action cuts. It reminded me of the match cut, but it was easier for me to line up the clips when there is a defined action that can be matched, instead of composition. For the match cut, maybe I had a hard time finding the right clips to use, but I find it hard to find similar enough compositions where it looks intentional, and not just a straight cut. But in the action shots I find it is really easy to make it look intentional, like if two clips have people doing the same movement I just stop the first clip in the middle of the movement and let the second clip finish it out, and it makes it look planned. I will just have to study some more match cuts.
