For this assignment, we were tasked with creating our own original scene, that had a beginning, middle and end, and had a surprise ending! I decided to create a scene about the feeling and experience of trying to get tasks done as someone with ADHD.
I enjoyed the freedom and creativity in this assignment to create whatever sequence we wanted. For me, the longest part of this was coming up with the idea, and then trying to film it. I only had my IPhone camera with me, and no tripod, so I was scrambling around my house to try and find surfaces to put my phone on.
I wanted the audience to feel the annoyance the character felt when faced with never ending tasks, so I kept coming back to shot of the ever-growing to do list. This is how I usually end up doing tasks, especially when I’m trying to clean. I’ll start with one thing and then keep finding things to do around the house until I forget what my original task was, and eventually feeling burnt out and giving up for the time being. I liked adding in the surprise of a fresh made coffee waiting for the character at the end, though, because I thought it added a reward for all the character’s struggle.
I was trying to channel a bit of Jim from The Office in this edit because I have been recently watching the show through for the first time, and think the way the character breaks the 4th wall by looking straight at the camera is very comical. I had the character in my scene look at the camera sometimes when things went wrong, or when she was really displeased with how her to do list was turning out.
I enjoyed the editing process for this, since I planned and shot all the clips I knew what order they were going in when edited, so it was really easy to put it all together. I didn’t do anything super complicated with the editing, but I enjoyed using all the shortcuts that we learned in class to make the editing go faster. I think my favorite sequence in the video was the one where I picked up the laundry and went over to the washing machine, because I liked the flow of the clips and how it seemed like natural movement from one clip to the next. I think if I added a couple more transition shots to the other parts of the scene, it would also have this same flow, but I wanted to keep it on the shorter side.
